Venn Diagrams (version 1612)

  • Apr. 2nd, 2010 at 11:35 AM

We have added a page to the site that compares your collection to those of other Take11 users. A principal feature is the use of Venn diagrams that show the numbers of movies that are common to two collections. Links to the page appear on your Profile page, the Community page, the site Navigation page, and the site Index.

The Venn diagrams are created using scalable vector graphics (SVG), which is supported natively by Firefox, Safari, and Opera, but not by IE. To see SVG images in IE you must download and install an SVG reader. Free readers are include the Adobe SVG Viewer and the Renesis Player.

Mass Edit Tags (version 1591)

  • Mar. 19th, 2010 at 5:15 PM
take11 small icon
A new page has been added to the site that allows users to mass-edit tags assigned to movies in their collections. Functionality is closely analogous to that on the Mass Edit Genres page. You may add, replace, or delete tags from one or more records simultaneously. You may also search over tags, including searches for records to which no tags have been assigned. User order for multiple tags on a record is preserved, and that order can be also edited on the page.

Links to the page (www.take11.com/edit/massedittags.php) are provided (a) on the Home page, (b) on your Profile page (under the list of your Most Used Tags ), (c) on the Mass Edit page, (d) on the All My Tags page, and (e) on the Edit page for each individual record.

For help using the page, see the hints posted behind the yellow "i" button on the Mass Edit Tags page.

A new page has been added to the site that allows users to mass-edit genres assigned to movies in their collections. Features:
  1. Load the page alphabetically by title or chronologically by date each record was added to your collection.
  2. Add genres, replace genres, or delete genres from one record or simultaneously from a group of records.
  3. Load the page by a search over one genre; e.g., list all titles assigned "Mystery". Then add to, replace, or delete as desired.
  4. Load the page by a search over multiple genres; e.g., list all titles assigned "Mystery, Comedy."
  5. Use a popup window on each title to reassign the order that multiple genres are listed on record pages for individual titles.
Links to the page (www.take11.com/edit/masseditgenres.php) are provided (a) on the Home page, (b) on your Profile page (under the list of your 10 Most Used Genres), (c) on the Mass Edit page, (d) on the All My Genres page, and (e) on the Edit page for each individual record.

For help using the page, see the hints posted behind the yellow "i" button on the Mass Edit Genre page.

The Take11 Vault now contains a page that lists recent and upcoming releases to DVD and Blu-ray. The list contains between 150 and 200 titles and is extracted from the Amazon database. Features:

  • Sort the Take11 list by title, by release date, or by medium (Blu-ray or DVD).
  • A link on each title will carry you to the Amazon page for that movie.
  • Hover on a title and a popup will display the cover image.
  • Select specific titles and have them immediately added to your Take11 wishlist.

The list will be updated weekly and covers about one week on either side of the current date. A link to the page appears on the Vault dashboard under the heading "Take11 Lists". You must be logged in to Take11 to access the page; the address is http://take11.com/vault/lists/newdvds.php

Tag Editing in Place (version 1505)

  • Feb. 19th, 2010 at 10:22 AM

Users can now globally edit their tags on the alpha-sorted tag page for their collections. Edits can be done to replace a tag, add to a tag, or delete a tag. These global edits are applied to all occurrences of the selected tag in the user's collection. This should be a big help for imposing consistency on the tags used in a collection; e.g., spelling and capitalization. Details on using this feature can be accessed by clicking on the yellow "i" button on the alpha-sorted tag page.

New Pages (version 1488)

In the last couple of weeks, four new pages have been added to Take11. Since these pages all pertain to a particular collection, users must be logged in to the site to view them, and we cannot provide generic links here.
  • A simple list of titles in a user's collection, formatted for viewing on mobile devices. Users can sort the list alpha by title, by medium (DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray, etc.), or by Genre.
  • A list of all actors in a user's collection.
  • A list of all directors in a collection.
  • A list of all composers in a collection.
The last three lists can be sorted alpha on last names or by the frequency at which they appear in the collection. Links to these pages can be found on the Home page, the left link bar on fluid-width skins, and in the Site Index.

Design of Vault Pages (version 1338)

We've posted a summary of design plans for developing Take11 Vault pages. These pages will aggregate data from individual user records and will delve into the history of film through a timeline, filmographies, awards, etc. The document can be seen at Vault Design Summary. Users are invited to review the plans and respond to Jim with comments and suggestions.

We have had several requests for supporting extended logins, so users do not have to re-enter passwords when returning to the site. I have resisted this because, for a site under development like Take11, the convenience of extended logins can lead to frustration. The problem is that a dynamic site relies heavily on JavaScripts, and for those scripts to be effective, browsers must cache scripts and the associated data. After all, a major motivation for using a JavaScript is so the browser does not need to continually request more data from the database on the server.

However, for a site under development, the structure of tables in the database may change. If such a change occurs while User X is on an extended login, then when that User revisits the site, her cache will be outdated. If she then attempts to load a page that executes a JavaScript, the script fails, the page does not load, and other undesirable consequences may follow. In most cases, this can be resolved by the User simply clearing the browser's cache. But the User may not be aware of that or the consequences may be more severe.

I am willing to try a compromise: (a) When I institute a structural change that makes browser caches outdated, I will then log all users off the site. When you log back in, your cache will be cleared of outdated scripts and data. However, I will forget to do this, from time-to-time, so (b) I have installed a script that automatically logs out any user who has been logged in for more than six consecutive days.

So, depending on what I'm doing on the backend, you may be logged in for as long as six days but maybe less: your login durations may appear random. Six days may be too long to avoid problems, we'll just have to see.

Still, your best defense is to log out when you have finished a session on the site.

Comments welcome. Jim.

Cover Gallery (version 1288)

We're added a new feature, the Cover Gallery, to the site. This page shows a timeline of your cover images, arranged according to the theatrical release date for each record in your collection. Your can reach your Cover Gallery from a link on your Profile page. If you're using a fluid-width skin, you can also reach it from a link under Member Pages in the left link bar.

You can see other the Cover Galleries of other Take11 users from the corresponding link on their Profile pages.

Two points about using the Cover Gallery: (a) To scroll through time, horizontally drag the background of the timeline field--like Google Maps. (b) If you add or delete movies, the changes should be reflected on the timeline after you reload the Cover Gallery page. If the Cover Gallery does not seem to be registering such changes, try clearing your browser's cache. The Cover Gallery functions because your browser is doing all the heavy lifting via JavaScript, and browsers are jealous about holding onto data that they've so carefully tucked away in cache.

Additional details can be found behind the yellow info button on the Cover Gallery page.

As always, if you encounter a problem, just email Jim.

Two new features have been added to Take11:
  • a tour that introduces folks to the site and may expose some of the features,
  • a page that lets you search for other registered Take11 users.
Please email me if any bugs or problems are uncovered in using these.  Thanks.   Jim
